DESCRIPTION:Do you know where your yarns have come from\, what they are dyed with\, and whether any harsh chemicals are involved in their production?    Award-winning weaver Alison Daykin has been researching and implementing tactics to reduce her environmental footprint and to sustainably-source her materials.  From reducing water consumption in processing to changing to all-natural dyes for her fabrics\, and from careful overseas sourcing to developing local supply chains\, Alison will tell us about her journey towards becoming a sustainable weaver.  Alison will also help us to open our eyes and take a good look at the fibres\, materials and dyes we use ourselves.

DESCRIPTION:Fungi have a long history of use in natural dyeing.  Amateur mycologists Irene Taylder and Carole Thorpe will open our eyes to the amazing array of colour potential from the mycological world. \nWhilst our decreasing knowledge of all things natural makes many of us highly cautious on fungi recognition and use\, Irene and Carole will tell us about their forays into fungi at home and abroad and make us see that fungus need not be regarded as the bogey dye.  We look forward to seeing you at Arbury!

DESCRIPTION:We’re delighted to welcome as our speaker Mary Schoeser\, internationally-renowned  textile and wallpaper historian\, Patron of the School of Textiles and Honorary Senior Research Fellow at the Victoria & Albert Museum\, one of the co-authors of the Yale University Volume ‘Silk’.  Mary has also been consulted for her silk expertise by English Heritage\, the National Trust and the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York. Each year Susan Dye grows three of the Medieval ‘Grand Teint’ dye plants on her allotment and after many years experimenting with both growing and dyeing methods now teaches and produces cloth dyed naturally with brilliant fast colours.
