DESCRIPTION:In this talk Susan Foulkes takes us to the Frozen North with an introduction to Sámi history and their band weaving tradition. Their woven band designs are colourful expressions of a delight in the beauty of small things and their rigid heddles and distinctive shuttles were made from reindeer antler. Susan will also be leading a balloted one-day workshop on Sámi band weaving on Sunday 1st November.

One of the 2019 cohort of Crafts Council-supported Hothouse Makers\, Momoka weaves on a mechanical dobby loom at her Nottingham studio\, mainly using cotton denim and silk yarns. DESCRIPTION:Guild members may be aware that 2020 will mark the 75th anniversary of UNESCO\, the UN’s cultural heritage\, education and social value organisation.  The Cambridge Guild is taking the theme of  ‘A World Tour of Textile Heritage’ in our programme for 2020. \nThe annual Guild Day in March will  feature making an African coiled platter and a ‘have a go’ session on Chinese Knotting.  In a world so rife with division\, our Guild is aiming to bring people and their different textile heritages together in a spirit of lively interest and peaceful co-existence\, echoing UNESCO’s founding principles.

DESCRIPTION:We’re delighted to welcome as our speaker Mary Schoeser\, internationally-renowned  textile and wallpaper historian\, Patron of the School of Textiles and Honorary Senior Research Fellow at the Victoria & Albert Museum\, one of the co-authors of the Yale University Volume ‘Silk’.  Mary has also been consulted for her silk expertise by English Heritage\, the National Trust and the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York. Come along to hear more about silk\, its creation and its use as an expression of wealth and privilege\, alluringly displayed in portraiture.  Talk starts at 2pm promptly at Arbury\, as usual. DESCRIPTION:All welcome at our next meeting with a talk from Susan Dye: “Madder of Fact: Horticulture and Historic Recipes for Seeing Red”. Each year Susan Dye grows three of the Medieval ‘Grand Teint’ dye plants on her allotment and after many years experimenting with both growing and dyeing methods now teaches and produces cloth dyed naturally with brilliant fast colours. Enjoy and learn from her experiences with ‘the other’ East Anglian historic dye crop: madder.
